How to Layer Fragrance Like A Pro
If you’re already here reading this, it’s probably because you’re in the know about the joys niche fragrance can bring to your life. But the joys don’t stop at just one perfume, oh no. There’s a whole frontier of fragrance you might not yet have dipped your nose into
It’s time to level up your fragrance game people, and explore everything the world of fragrance layering has to offer. By the end of this piece, you should be armed with enough information to dive nose first into crafting your own signature scent, and feel confidence in your perfume game
This time of year, where it’s skin-burning sunshine one minute and single digit temperatures the next, is really the best time to experiment with this. If you’re not sure whether to go for a winter or summer scent, no matter! Wear them both. But it doesn’t hurt to have some understanding of the best way to approach it first, right?
Our favourite thing about fragrance layering is there’s no rules! But guidance is always welcome, so we’ll start you off with some great advice from Bee Shapiro, founder of Ellis Brooklyn. She recommends wearing no perfume at all for an hour or so and really paying attention to your fragrance undertone. Is it powdery, sour, sweet? This will help determine your next steps when it comes to choosing which fragrances to layer
And if you find that fragrance doesn’t seem to last on your skin, this could be down to lack of oils and moisture. Give your skin a helping hand and prepare it with a moisturising lotion. The extra hydration will give an excellent base to really hold on to those scent molecules. Of course, the more layers of scent you use, the longer they will linger on your skin, but that’s not to say you should gather your entire collection and spritz them all one after the other
We think it’s also good practise to use fragrances with more natural ingredients than synthetic, if you can, and to familiarise yourself with the notes of the fragrances you plan to use before spraying. Try grabbing a bit of tissue and layer the scents you’re considering on that, to get a rough idea of how they blend first of all
And now for the good part – applying the fragrance layers to your skin. Think of this step as similar to the composition of a perfume itself. Start with a heavier scent at the base and the lighter scents on top. We don’t want to overpower the more delicate notes after all, we want them to be enhanced. The more you experiment, the more you’ll discover brand new fragrances within your collection you never knew you had. And even better, no one else will have them either!
We especially love to introduce molecular scents to our layers, like Genetic Bliss by 27 87 Perfumes. Using a fragrance that already works with your fragrance undertone when used on its own, creates an exciting base for layering your other favourites on top. It’s the best way to create your signature scent, but takes it to an elevated level
Really the best advice we can give you is to have fun with it and choose scents that make you feel good! Test combinations on your skin and your clothes, making use of your pulse points, your throat area and even the ends of your hair. On clothing you could spritz onto collars and cuffs or scarves for that extra whiff as you move around during the day too
As we said before, there are no rules and you’ll be fragrance layering like a pro in no time
